Fontana del Petrarca

Fontana del Petrarca

The fountain is located on the lowest part of the village and it already existed when Petrarca arrived here. He went there to draw water and probably he supervised the renovation works. The frontal arch is made on Nanto’s stone and a Latin writing is engraved on it: “Fonti numen inest, hospes: venerare liquorem, unde bibens cecinit digna Petrarcha deis.” It is an invocation to foreign people who come to visit Arquà: a divine power lives in the source, and it is drinking this water that Petrarca was allowed to write his beautiful verses; for this reason, the fountain has to be venerated and respected.
