Castello Festival 2025 – PAOLO FRESU DEVIL QUARTET

Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 9:15 PM in Piazza Eremitani in Padua

The energetic Devil Quartet by Paolo Fresu proposes a new project that combines the experience gained over decades of intense collaboration with the primordial sense of freedom offered by improvisation, conveying all the best of the immense creativity of this beloved formation that manages to enjoy itself and entertain every audience like few others.

The Devil Quartet is truly an extraordinary group. Born from the ashes of the beloved Angel Quartet, glorified by many continental successes during the 1990s, it has drawn renewed creative energy from that experience and, after a predominantly “electric” start, has chosen to follow Fresu’s whole idea of a new sense of “mixed” music or, as he defines it, “melangé.”

This undertaking, far from easy, has reached an intelligent completion when, starting from what seemed to be the most “electric” group in Italian jazz of those years, it proposed a completely acoustic version of musical expression in the subsequent album “Carpe Diem,” overturning the canons and also the sleepy habits of many critics who find it easy to quickly label a project. The primary ability of these new “devils” is thus to intertwine languages and energy like very few others. Fresu’s dialogues with three true masters of Italian style (a term coined by the late musicologist Vittorio Franchini) thus remain at the highest qualitative level to which the group has accustomed us.

Regarding Fresu, finally, nothing more to say except to note that he seems to possess the gift of almost infallibility, presenting his unique sound in a work that seems to have been created to respond with concrete actions to the famous maxim of Fedor Dostoevsky, for whom “only beauty will save the world.”
