The Padova Jazz Festival moves to the Sala dei Giganti at Liviano for two consecutive evenings dedicated to Cuban Latin jazz, with two of the most flamboyant, virtuosic, and representative pianists of the Caribbean island’s musical school: Alfredo Rodriguez and Roberto Fonseca. It begins on Thursday, November 13 (at 9 PM) with the concert of Alfredo Rodriguez‘s trio, accompanied by two acrobatic partners, Panagiotis Andreou on bass and Michael Olivera on drums.

His mentor was even Quincy Jones. Those who have listened to him do not spare compliments: captivating, charismatic, acrobatic. But let’s start from the beginning. Born in Cuba in 1985, the son of an artist (his father was a singer and TV host), Alfredo Rodriguez received a classical piano education. But at the same time, since adolescence, he practiced popular music, performing with his father’s orchestra. In 2006, the Montreux festival brought his talent to international attention: even Quincy Jones, who heard him in a private audition on that occasion. In 2009, from Mexico, where he was performing with his father, he crossed the border into the USA in an unorthodox way, seeking political asylum. He then lived on random gigs, gradually finding his way also thanks to Quincy Jones, who decided to work with him, involving him in the creation of the English version of the official song for the Shanghai World Expo.

Still under the aegis of his illustrious mentor, the pianist began his recording career as a leader, all on the Mack Avenue label: Sounds of Space (2012), The Invasion Parade (2014), Tocororo (2016), up to the more recent The Little Dream (2018), Duologue (2019), and Coral Way (2023). In the meantime, Rodriguez has played with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Patti Austin, McCoy Tyner… Above all, he has made clear his powerful pianistic style: an intense fusion of spirit and technique, both Cuban and jazz.

The Padova Jazz Festival is organized by the Miles Cultural Association chaired by Gabriella Piccolo Casiraghi, in collaboration with the municipal administration and the regional administration, with contributions from Bosco Costruzioni and Volksbank, and with the support of the Ministry of Culture.
