{"id":11402,"date":"2020-10-27T08:40:51","date_gmt":"2020-10-27T07:40:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.turismopadova.it\/the-places-of-the-great-war\/"},"modified":"2020-10-27T08:40:52","modified_gmt":"2020-10-27T07:40:52","slug":"the-places-of-the-great-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turismopadova.it\/en\/the-places-of-the-great-war\/","title":{"rendered":"The places of the Great War"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"11402\" class=\"elementor elementor-11402 elementor-8292\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-34a7d9e9 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"34a7d9e9\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7e26d5e2\" data-id=\"7e26d5e2\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7234dc84 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7234dc84\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p lang=\"en-GB\" align=\"justify\">From the historical centre of Padova to the surroundings, many monuments bear witness to the Great War: castles, villas, shrines that honour the protagonists of the war that witnessed how the city of Padova became the capital of the front after the defeat of Caporetto.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Not only places of defeat, such as the <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Sacrario di Cima Grappa<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> or the <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Ponte degli Alpini<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> in Bassano, but also places of entertainment for rulers and soldiers and command headquarters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Castle of Catajo<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> at Battaglia Terme was the site of hunting matches by Archduke Ferdinand of Austria shortly before his assassination in Sarajevo, while <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Villa Selvatico Capodilista<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> was the residence of King Vittorio Emanuele III\u2019s guests. <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">On the Bacchiglione near the Castle of <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>San Martino della Vaneza<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> in Cervarese Santa Croce, the Arditi used to train to wade across the Piave river, famously recalled by the &#8220;Legend of the Piave&#8221;, a patriotic hymn composed by master Ermete Giovanni Gaeta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">During the first months of 1918 King Vittorio Emanuele III chose <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Villa Corinaldi &#8211; Lispida<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> of Monselice as his residence, Diaz&#8217;s Supreme Command decided its headquarters would be in <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Abano Terme<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">, the Command of the IV Army of General Giadrino chose the <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Imperial Villa of Galliera Veneta<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Not only places of war, but also places of peace and victory as <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Villa Scalfo Monzino in Monterosso<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> (Abano Terme) where the Victory Bulletin was written and the renowned <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Villa Giusti<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> where the armistice between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire was signed on November 3, 1918.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">On the Noble floor of Caff\u00e8 Pedrocchi it is possible to visit the <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Museum of the Risorgimento and the Contemporary Age<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> that preserves numerous relics: photographs, an Italian helmet, a 1917 machine gun, the uniform of a carabiniere on horseback, a bicycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The headquarters of Palazzo Camerini (Via Altinate, 59) feature the <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Historical Museum of the Third Army.<\/b><\/span><b> <\/b><span lang=\"en-GB\">(Opening hours Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 4:30pm; Saturdays and public holidays from 9:00am to midday.
