And very quickly this gave rise to the customary combination of an afternoon outing and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>spuncioni<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> [snacks]. Many families in places such as Teolo, Vo, Castelnuovo and Torreglia opened up their courtyards and gardens to these first motorised visitors, offering such snacks as: <strong>hard-boiled eggs with salt, pepper and lemon<\/strong> (the more sophisticated also added a sliver of anchovy); <strong>broadbeans, with or without onions;<\/strong> <strong>sliced meats<\/strong> (above all, salami and sopressa); <strong>olives and artichokes.<\/strong> And, of course, there was <strong>the Red or White <\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>della casa<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>Torta della Nonna<\/i><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> [Granny\u2019s Own Tart] was also a favourite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-GB\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> The whole thing became so well-established that as the economic boom got underway, a number of these improvised \u2018snack providers\u2019 took their first timid steps into the restaurant business<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-GB\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> Since those pioneers of the 1950s and 60s, the food on offer in <strong>Padua and the surrounding area has taken giant steps forward<\/strong> \u2013 far outstripping what one would expect as just normal development over the course of time. Now, it has <strong>reached the peaks of international recognition<\/strong>. The greatest example of this is represented by the <strong>Alajmo family<\/strong> (father Erminio, mother Rita, chef Massimiliano, and the siblings Raffaele and Laura), who every year figure at the top of the most important Italian restaurant guides (Espresso, Gambero Rosso, Michelin). It is they who are behind \u2018Le Calandre\u2019 (and \u2018Il Calandrino\u2019) at Rubano; \u2018l\u2019Abc\u2019 at Selvazzano; the legendary Caf\u00e9 Quadri (and \u2018Il Quadrino\u2019) in Venice\u2019s St. Mark\u2019s Square; the \u2018Stern\u2019 in Paris; the \u2018Amo\u2019 in Treviso and the \u2018Amor\u2019 in Milan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-GB\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> Overall, <strong>the general level of restaurant food has undergone almost exponential improvement.<\/strong> Nowadays, people no longer say \u201cYou don\u2019t eat badly in Padua\u201d, they say \u201cYou eat well\u201d.
