One immediately thinks of <a href=\"\/?p=8675\"><strong>Giotto<\/strong><\/a>, but he was Tuscan; <a href=\"\/?p=8707\"><strong>Petrarch<\/strong><\/a>, but he spent only the last years of his life at Arqu\u00e0; <strong><a href=\"\/?p=9792\">Galileo Galilei<\/a>,<\/strong> again Tuscan, though he did teach at the university from 1592 to 1610; <a href=\"\/?p=6594\"><strong>St. Anthony,<\/strong><\/a> but he was born in Lisbon. And what about <a href=\"\/?p=8698\"><strong>Antenor<\/strong><\/a>? Official legend has it that he was a Trojan prince; in fact he was a Magyar soldier. So does Padua have no famous sons, just important people who are associated with it for a range of different reasons?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-GB\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\"> This is clearly not the case. The city was the birthplace of a remarkable number of people famous in all sorts of fields: <strong><a href=\"\/?p=8705\">Elena Lucrezia Cornaro<\/a>,<\/strong> the world\u2019s first woman to graduate from university; <strong>Livy<\/strong>, the author of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><i>Ab urbe condita<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium\">, a bestseller of 2,000 years ago that comprises 142 separate books; <strong>Tiziano Aspetti<\/strong>, the sculptor of St. Anthony\u2019s marble tomb; <strong>Giovan Battista Belzoni<\/strong>, a very special sort of archaeologist;<strong> Angelo Beolco<\/strong> (better known as \u2018Il Ruzante\u2019), a famous sixteenth-century playwright; <strong>Alberto Biasi<\/strong>, a contemporary artist; <strong>Vincenzo Stefano Breda<\/strong>, nineteenth-century owner of major ironworks; <strong>Giuseppe Colombo<\/strong>, holder of the NASA Gold Medal; <strong>Jacopo Facciolati<\/strong>, author of the largest Latin dictionary ever produced; <strong>Giovanni Eremitani<\/strong>, monk, hydraulic engineer and architect (he designed the Palazzo della Ragione); <strong>Guariento,<\/strong> a fourteenth-century artist;<strong> Andrea Mantegna<\/strong>, a very important fifteenth-century artist;<strong> Ippolito Nievo<\/strong>, a nineteenth-century novelist who also fought as one of Garibaldi\u2019s \u2018Thousand\u2019; <strong>Andrea Palladio<\/strong>, a sixteenth-century architect whose influence has been felt throughout the world;<strong> Pietro d\u2019Abano<\/strong>, a controversial fourteenth-century philosopher and alchemist; <strong>Alberto Terrani<\/strong>, an actor; <strong>Alessandro Varotari<\/strong>, a seventeenth-century painter known as \u2018Il Padovanino\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-GB\"><span style=\"font-size: medium\">This is just a part of the list of the famous figures to whom Padua can lay claim.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Who are the famous Paduans?
