{"id":9797,"date":"2020-09-18T11:21:53","date_gmt":"2020-09-18T09:21:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.turismopadova.it\/the-hidden-places-of-the-city-the-undergrounds-of-padua\/"},"modified":"2020-10-27T08:46:20","modified_gmt":"2020-10-27T07:46:20","slug":"the-hidden-places-of-the-city-the-undergrounds-of-padua","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turismopadova.it\/en\/the-hidden-places-of-the-city-the-undergrounds-of-padua\/","title":{"rendered":"The hidden places of the city: Padova\u2019s underground world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">The <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>archaeological excavations<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> carried out under <a href=\"\/?p=6298\">Palazzo della Ragione<\/a> in 1991-92 by the Superintendence of Archaeological Heritage of Veneto brought to light important documents on the <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>stratified building growth of the city<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> before 1218, the year in which the construction of the Palace began.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Roman and medieval houses<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> were demolished for its construction; their remains can now be seen through two longitudinal tunnels and a cross tunnel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">The North Gallery hosts the remains of a <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>building for public use<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> of significant size, a <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>tower house from the 12th century<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">, an earthen floor of a residential building, a street and a moat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\">The cross gallery hosts the remains of a structure with brick walls, clay floors and a small fireplace.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">In the South gallery, instead, there are the remains of a <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>house-fortress<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> made of trachyte blocks and bricks from the Roman period, a <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>well<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">, a <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>cellar<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> that was probably used as a cell of the Ancient Prisons, a <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>tower building<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> with a barrel vaulted brick cellar, and a <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>mosaic floor<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> with black and white tiles of a <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Roman domus from the 1st-2nd century AD<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> collapsed after a fire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\">The entrance to the Archaeological Area is located in the central corridor below the Palazzo della Ragione with a metal grate with stairs.
