The Sant’Orsola Festival: history, opera, theatre and soul pop

7. SEP 2025
Other

On Sunday, 7 September, from 3.30 pm to 7 pm, in Padua, in the garden of the former Convent of Sant’Orsola (Via Sant’Orsola Vecchia n.5) near Parco Roncajette, in the San Gregorio Magno/Terranegra area, the Tempi e Ritmi Association, in collaboration with Teatro Laterale, Mistral and Padotipia, presents the ‘SANT’ORSOLA FESTIVAL’, with the contribution of the Consulta di Quartiere 3B of the Municipality of Padua as part of the 2025 Participatory Budget.

An artistic afternoon (or rather, one featuring multiple art forms) in a historic space in the city, unknown to most, which was donated to the Cistercian monks by Enrico degli Scrovegni (1224) and in the following centuries also became a Franciscan convent (14002) and then a lazaretto for our city (in the mid-1500s): until 1772, the monumental complex of St. Ursula was one of the main convent centres “outside the walls”, when it was acquired by the Dondi dall’Orologio and Cortivo families, who demolished the church, sacristy and bell tower. Very little remains of that complex today (the church was demolished in the 19th century, as was most of the convent), but on the lintel of a walled-up door there is an inscription that magically takes us back in time, recalling ancient ways of life: Pax huic domui (peace to this house).

Those attending from Padua will be able to explore this space (privately owned) and at the same time appreciate various art forms developed over many centuries, which will be performed live by singers and actors from our region: at 3.30 pm, the audience will be welcomed with “pillole di storia di S.Orsola” (bits of history about St. Ursula) by historian Giuseppe Rossetto; followed, at 4 pm, by a recital of famous bel canto arias with the VENICE OPERA SINGERS (Simonetta Baldin, soprano; David Guy, baritone; on piano: Micaela Tiozzo); then, at 5 p.m., the theatre show “A LIFE FOR POETRY AND LOVE: GASPARA STAMPA” with Daniela Zangara and Gabriella Cairone from Teatro Laterale, on the life of the 16th-century Paduan poet, directed by Paolo Caporello; finally, from 6 pm, the ‘songs of the soul’, soul pop music from the last century and today, thanks to the young duo KIA&CLA (‘From the young people of today for the young people of yesterday and today’).

Admission is free, subject to availability. (POSSIBLE RECOVERY – IN CASE OF BAD WEATHER: 14 SEPTEMBER).

The organisers recommend that those who can, come on foot or by bicycle.

Parking is recommended at Parco Roncajette.
