From 22 November 2024 to 6 January 2025, the Centro Culturale Altinate/San Gaetano will host an exhibition by Bruno Lorini entitled ‚… Noncurante, mi accorgo del monte del Sud‘ (I don’t care, I notice the mountains of the South), which brings together the works created by the painter over the last five years of work and research.
On display are about fifty works, twenty of which are large, made with earth, pigments, oxides, clay, ash and glue, on canvas, wood, plastic materials and X-rays. And, as the artist himself emphasises in the exhibition’s subtitle, those exhibited are not mountains but, rather, ‚apparitions of mountains‘. Apparitions in the sense that their presence is real, but the reality is transfigured. The mountains, in fact, appear through their transfiguration and it is light that is the agent that works the transformation.
The artist suggests that it is precisely in light that the primary, if not archetypal, force of transfiguration is hidden. The light that strikes Lorini’s mountains is icy, sharp, completely sidereal, and it is precisely the grain and intensity of this light that decrees that detachment between them and us who see them from below, a detachment that produces an optical illusion. It is another law of transfiguration: transfigured bodies and things, even if they are close, are unapproachable. The visitor, therefore, is confronted with spatial mountains, of a planet that is not another than the earth, but is the earth transfigured into a silent, far-reaching, enigmatic sublime, completely beyond human passions.
The exhibition, which opens on 21 November at 6 p.m., is accompanied by a text by Valerio Paolo Mosco.
