Performing Mendelssohn’s Octet is the ambition and pleasure of all string quartets and for this precious proposal the Doric Quartet and the Quiroga Quartet have joined forces. A proposal that always corresponds to the expectation and joy of listening to it on the part of the public. The Octet op. 20 – like the Overture op. 21 from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” – is the extraordinary and very precocious fruit of a sixteen-year-old Mendelssohn. He wrote it in 1825 for his violinist friend Eduard Rietz, but it was the violinist Pierre Baillot who gave its first performance at the Paris Conservatory in 1832.
Il Quartetto Doric fondato nel 1998 a Londra, ha potuto studiare con il Quartetto Alban Berg, il Quartetto Artemis e il Quartetto La Salle. Nel 2008 ha vinto il Primo Premio alla Osaka International Chamber Music Competition e il Secondo Premio al Concorso “Premio Paolo Borciani” di Reggio Emilia. Il Quartetto ha una ricca discografia per Chandos (integrali di Britten, Mendelssohn, Schumann, quartetti di Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Walton). Vincitore del prestigioso Premio Nazionale di Musica di Spagna 2018 e di importanti concorsi internazionali (Bordeaux, Paolo Borciani, Ginevra, Pechino, Fnapec-Parigi, Palau Barcellona), nel 2013 i componenti del Quartetto Quiroga sono diventati i primi “artists in residence” nel Palazzo Reale di Madrid, potendo così suonare con un set unico di strumenti Stradivari. Il Quartetto è presente nelle principali sale da concerto internazionali: Pierre Boulez Saal, Konzerthaus e Philharmonie Berlino, Wigmore Hall Londra, The Frick Collection e Lincoln Center New York, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Mozarteum Salisburgo, Palau de la Música Barcellona, La Pergola Firenze) e collabora regolarmente con musicisti quali Martha Argerich, Jörg Widmann, Veronika Hagen, Clemens Hagen, Cappella Amsterdam e i quartetti d’archi Doric, Meta4 e Ardeo.
