FREEVOLA. CONFESSION ON THE UNSUSTAINABLE NEED FOR ADMIRATION
by and with Lucia Raffaella Mariani, direction and dramaturgy consultancy Lorenzo Maragoni, scenic movement consultant Erica Nava, a Trento Spettacoli production with the support of Potenziali Evocati Multimediali.
Being a woman is like being two inside a body. The one who exists and the one who watches herself exist, the supervisor and the supervised, the subject and the object of myself, not only of others, of myself.
The supervisor’s voice whispers: «You have to please everyone, especially straight and wealthy men. You have to be admired, pleasant, appealing. You have to be liked! Be careful because I’m watching you, because if others like you, you’ll be happy. Be beautiful, be nice, be brilliant, take up little space, smile, perfume yourself, give it to her, or at least let her smell it, conquer, don’t get tired, conquer! You’ll see that they’ll love you!» And the supervised woman doesn’t know if she agrees. She feels, like everyone else, that she wants to be happy, and loved.
“FREEVOLA” takes this unbearable need for admiration to the extreme. Miss Mariani enters the stage to participate in a contest, smiles with full teeth, desperate, and says: “If I understand correctly, the contest works like this. I have one hour to make you love me, for who I am.” The timer starts. An open game begins with the audience, who are called upon to be responsible for their judgments about the young lady: they can use a thumbs down if they don’t like the young lady, a thumbs up if they do, and they can throw a rose found under her chair on the stage if they feel a pang of love.
On the other hand, on stage, Miss Mariani, in an attempt to be irresistible and to receive all the roses that the jury has, is overwhelmed by her insecurities and fragilities, and can do nothing but give way to a tragicomic, fragmented, poetic confession about the duty to please.
