Rumore Bianco

The ambrotypes of Danilo Mauro Malatesta

The exhibition also includes drawings by Francesco Tonarini in dialogue with the statues of the Selvatico high school and the blood paintings by Cinzia Cotellessa exhibition curated by Marina Sonzini Palazzo Santo Stefano, 22 June – 4 August 2024

The vernissage of the Rumore Bianco exhibition will be on Saturday 22 June at 4.30 pm at Palazzo Santo Stefano.

The exhibition places alongside the statues of the Pietro Selvatico artistic high school (plasters and casts which constitute copies of Donatello, Verrocchio and above all Michelangelo), with works by some contemporary artists who offer their perspective on the work of the two greatest sculptors of the Renaissance and Italian Baroque.

The cycle of works is a series of ambrotypes by the Roman photographer Danilo Mauro Malatesta which combine high artistic value with a social theme.

These wet collodion photographs on glass plates, split and then printed, capture the details of Bernini’s «Rape of Proserpina» (kept at the Villa Borghese museum in Rome) and are divided into two moments: one entirely in black and white which he enlarges some details of the famous statue; the second, colored in black and white, tells the story of the descent into Hades and the subsequent rebirth with three images (Hell, Purgatory and Paradise). The curator of the exhibition, Marina Sonzini, will propose a reading of Michelangelo’s works in the light of Neoplatonic philosophy, highlighting the content of divine proportion and golden section, the symbolism and various insights such as a comparison between Michelangelo’s David and those of Donatello , Verrocchio and Bernini.

«The exhibition also wants to restore its importance to the myth, explaining the symbolic meaning of that narrative in Ovid’s Metamorphoses – adds the curator -. And highlighting, for comparison, how Michelangelo was no different in representing the fundamental role of the feminine (as Giotto had already done) with biblical stories rather than myth.
