Templum Luminis is a multimedia show by Kazakh pianist and composer Angelina Yershova and astronomer and science communicator Stefano Giovanardi. The narrative and musical journey of Templum Luminis – a flexible metaphor for an astronomical observatory, and more generally for any context in which science and emotion shape knowledge – revolves around research, discovery and, ultimately, the perception of wonder that springs from humanity’s connection with the cosmos.
Through their intelligent sensitivity and sensitive intelligence – amplified by visual contexts created with artificial intelligence and sound registers that blend piano, voice, Tibetan bells and other acoustic and electronic instruments – each listener is led to confront the rational and emotional meanings held by the rays of light coming from the depths of a starry night. Templum Luminis premiered on 12 December 2023 at the Auditorium of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, as an event linked to the Macchine del Tempo exhibition of the National Institute of Astrophysics, recording a full house and considerable public acclaim. The show is part of the Astroconcert multimedia project, which has featured Angelina Yershova and Stefano Giovanardi since 2008 with the aim of experimenting with new languages and original formats for communicating science, creating thematic performances of scientific narration, live music and theatrical elements.
Astroconcert performances have been hosted at science and music festivals, national and international online events, conferences and theatre festivals in prestigious locations such as the Rome Planetarium, Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, the State Archives and Palazzo delle Esposizioni (Rome), Piazza Dante (Naples) and Teatro Miela (Trieste).
