The title of this solo exhibition, “The Goddess of Water,” represents the beginning of an intense homage to the lagoon city, connected to Padua by ancient waterways, originated as Venus from the waves, water being a feminine element, the source of all life, the principle of everything. This encapsulates the meaning and essence of Gianpaolo Cappello’s painting, in which cultural, social, historical, and philosophical insights and premises merge to create unity, restoring the acknowledgment of continuity, a connection between past and present, inner and outer space, surface and depth.
It is for this reason that the painterly layering in his paintings, achieved sometimes by adding collage components, but more often through expertise in glazes, is configured as “coating”: a covering of a narrative that delves deep: from the real to memory, to the unconscious, without neglecting bright flashes that momentarily interrupt the flow of discourse, creating a conceptual shift, graphic and decorative insertions, subtle dripping that vaguely recalls post-impressionist strains.
Therefore, Gianpaolo Cappello’s painting dissipates the distinction between epochs, and the awareness of the subjectivity of the worldview becomes knowledge, acceptance, meditation, in order to achieve a reasoned and measured approach to shadows and to fully appreciate the brilliant polychromy of the images that surround us. 20.09.2025 Maria Palladino
GIANPAOLO CAPPELLO, born July 1, 1954, in Arzergrande (PD), studied art and graduated in Padua. For several years, he has been actively present in national and international artistic life with solo exhibitions and, by invitation, at painting reviews and awards.
