To create, and to live, one must make mistakes. Learn to embrace errors and transform them into experience.
The stories of Gianni Rodari (Grammar of Fantasy, The Book of Errors) and the inventions of Bruno Munari (Fantasy, Where Things Come From) inspire a fun and cheeky journey through many authors’ mistakes to tackle an important theme.
Those who don’t do, don’t make mistakes. Yet, today we often feel paralyzed by the fear of error, by the weight of others’ judgments on our actions.
Errors are necessary, as useful as bread, and often even beautiful: for example, the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Sophie loves playing with words, but Sophie never gets one right. And she cannot stand that everyone keeps pointing it out. Sometimes she wishes everyone could see her for who she is, sometimes she wishes to be transparent. In the face of the latest reproach, she decides to take refuge in the school’s basement and not come out again.
But once she descends the forbidden stairs, Sophia discovers that it is a door to another world. It’s the territory of Gianni, a classmate who always moves his hands when he talks, and sometimes forgets to use his voice. In his family, they speak sign language. Gianni is an expert at feeling wrong, he has turned the basement into his museum of errors, which he plays with using a true grammar. The Grammar of Fantasy. Playing with him, Sophie learns to invent stories in reverse, starting from a word thrown into the pond like a stone, or from two different words, in short, to use words and stories as toys.
To ultimately mix languages, the Italian sign language and Italian, body language and the language of objects, and finally, together with her friend, to show herself to everyone for who she wishes to be.
The show, built with particular attention to inclusivity, is performed by Emilia Piz, actress, and Nicola Noro, interpreter and performer of LIS and LISt.
