69th FRIENDS OF MUSIC OF PADUA CONCERT SEASON

Tuesday, December 2, 2025, 8:15 PM – Auditorium C. Pollini, Padua

Benjamin Alard, harpsichord Music by Jacques Duphly, Domenico Scarlatti, Johann Sebastian Bach

At the harpsichord, one of the most prestigious international performers of early music, Frenchman Benjamin Alard, a past guest of the Friends of Music, will perform. The program features music by Jacques Duphly, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Domenico Scarlatti. The pieces performed have in common that they were all published during the composers’ lifetimes, and at that time, few masters had the opportunity, fortune, and even success to publish their own music. These composers were contemporaries, but they belonged to very different cultural worlds: while the compositions by Bach and Scarlatti have the character of etudes, those by Duphly, one of the last harpsichordists to inherit the great French instrumental tradition, are more like portraits and musical miniatures.

Benjamin Alard trained in Paris, where he discovered the harpsichord repertoire, and in 2004 he won first prize at the International Harpsichord Competition in Bruges. He also pursued organ studies, and since 2005 has been the titular organ player of the Bernard Aubertin organ at the Église Saint-Louis-en-l’Île in Paris, where he regularly gives recitals dedicated to Bach’s music. The Bach universe is particularly congenial to him, so much so that he is currently recording Bach’s complete keyboard works with the Église Saint-Louis. He is a guest at leading early music centers in Europe, Japan, and the United States, performing on both harpsichord and organ.
