The organ cycle CONCERTI PER L’AVVENTO (CONCERTS FOR ADVENT), organised by the Amici della Musica di Padova (Friends of Music of Padua) in the month leading up to Christmas, concludes on Sunday 22 December, at 5 p.m., at the Church of S. Antonio Abate, Collegio Mazza.

On the programme is a fascinating repertoire, with music by Buxtehude, Bruhns, Bach, Mendelssohn and also the 20th-century Austrian composer Anton Heiller. Making the church’s beautiful organ resound will be Matteo Varagnolo, a young musician from Padua by birth and training.

In 2022 Varagnolo obtained a first-level academic diploma in Organ with top marks, honours and honourable mention at the Pollini Conservatory, where he continued his training with maestros P. Turetta (organ), R. Loreggian (harpsichord) and A. Kirschner (choir conducting). He is currently attending the Orgel Konzertfach master’s course at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. In 2019 he won the first prize ex-aequo of category A at the 1st International Organ Competition ‘Fondazione Friuli’, and in 2021 the first prize at the 2nd International Organ Competition ‘Fiorella Benetti-Brazzale – Città di Vicenza’.

The concerts were organised in collaboration with Collegio Mazza, and with the patronage and contribution of the Ministry of Culture, the City of Padua Department of Culture and the Veneto Region.
