EXHIBITION:

“STORIES – VISUAL PATHS INSPIRED BY THE SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY, BY EDGAR LEE MASTERS”

By artist Gabriela Spiller – with the support of the Department of Culture of the City of Padua.

From July 24th to September 7th at the Sala della Gran Guardia, Piazza dei Signori, Padua.

Opening hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM, 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM. Free admission.

“Stories” represents a visual and introspective journey, crafted in the language of contemporary art and intended as a profound and intimate communicative sharing with the viewer, engaging and touching deep within each individual’s emotions, just as the epitaphs in Masters’ masterpiece lay bare the vices and virtues, strengths and weaknesses, sins and regrets of the protagonists who narrate their lives in the first person, perpetuating them to make them permanent, through memory and reflection.

The works comprise twenty-one large Ferrarese hemp canvases, each depicting stories from the “Anthology,” two works entitled “The Hill”—the original from the book and one interpreted with a contemporary perspective—plus a personal narrative, and three raku ceramic vases. The canvases resemble portals, which one can approach discreetly, with perceptive empathy, allowing oneself to be drawn in and drawn into the stories described, recognizing oneself in them, blurring the subtle boundaries between past and present, existence and nonexistence, individuality and collectivity.

GABRIELA SPILLER, a painter and sculptor from Vicenza, grew up without any academic training, but supported by good teachers. She spent a long period of development refining multiple techniques and styles, from ceramics to plastic arts, always in the field of abstraction, as well as family commitments. Ceramics and sculpture have imposed a demanding apprenticeship on her in terms of materials and expressive characteristics. Rich in imagination and open to external stimuli, she chooses to use the most diverse materials she finds herself working with, manipulating them with great skill and expressive power. A strong temperament, combined with a keen sense of risk and chance, has allowed her to develop highly interesting formal solutions with rich chromaticism. Furthermore, it has allowed her to quickly overcome the milestones she has just conquered and set out on other paths, such as recently exploring landscapes and flowers, which have appeared in solutions of fascinating chromaticism.
