The collaboration between Castello Festival and the Associazione Filosofia di Vita (Philosophy of Life Association) is renewed for the 2025 edition, offering two meetings to share an intense reflection on the political choices that the European Union must implement.
A look at Europe between earth and sky, with two distinguished men and three distinguished women who, in their professions, share the ‘philosophy’ that is the mother of both intellectual and scientific reflection.
The second event will involve astrophysicists Patrizia Caraveo and Monica Lazzarin in conversation with renowned journalist and television presenter Carmen Lasorella. In a discussion on ‘How Europe is addressing space ecology’, the three experts will share their knowledge on various levels, from research to politics.
Our planet is surrounded by satellites that perform extraordinary scientific and commercial work: think of the communication, global navigation, and weather forecasting services that we all use. However, the explosive growth in the number of objects in orbit poses global risks that cannot be ignored. In fact, negative impacts are already emerging: these range from light pollution to the danger of collisions, from the deposition of toxic gases in the atmosphere to the risk of accidents caused by falling debris.
Scientists will show us how the satellite system is now invading the sky and how Europe must act quickly to regulate, defend, and clean up the sky above our heads, which in many ways is already becoming very dangerous.
Too much terrestrial lighting is compromising astronomical observation, but also the health of humans and animals. Another threat to the integrity of the sky is posed by fleets of commercial satellites (such as those of Starlink) that clutter the lower orbits, causing much concern to astronomers and amateur astronomers.
The two astrophysicists will share their scientific insights—collected in various essays and popular science books—in an interview with journalist and presenter Carmen Lasorella, an expert in geopolitics and one of the first war correspondents on Italian television, who also served as head of the Berlin office for Rai, covering news from Eastern European countries.
