Saturday, November 8 with the performance of saxophonist Max Ionata alongside the Hammond Groovers (Daniele Cordisco on guitar, Antonio Caps on Hammond organ, and Elio Coppola on drums) completes the concert cycle of the Padova Jazz Festival at the Auditorium Centro Culturale Altinate/San Gaetano (starting at 9 PM). The festival will then continue in other locations, including the Teatro Verdi and the Sala dei Giganti.
Max Ionata (1972), a reference saxophonist of the Italian jazz scene, is a tenor player with a ‘big’, powerful, and fluid voice, firmly framed within the African-American tradition (Rollins, Coltrane) and well-acclimated to contemporary jazz. He has shown superb performances in quite different contexts such as the duo with piano (with Dado Moroni and Luca Mannutza) and the pianoless trio (with Reuben Rogers and Clarence Penn). Recently, he led a trio with organ often enhanced by the presence of special guest Gegè Telesforo, while his resume also includes collaborations with Lenny White, Billy Hart, Alvin Queen, Joe Locke, Mike Stern, Bob Mintzer, Roberto Gatto, Stefano Di Battista, Flavio Boltro, Fabrizio Bosso, Enrico Pieranunzi, Mario Biondi, Ornella Vanoni, Sergio Cammariere, Renzo Arbore…
The recent album Four Groovin’ One (2024) renews the decade-long collaboration between the renowned saxophonist and the Hammond Groovers, a trio composed of Daniele Cordisco (guitar), Antonio Caps (Hammond B3), and Elio Coppola (drums). The band’s new musical program mixes original compositions and reinterpretations of contemporary jazz classics, firmly linking to the historical and seductive sounds of hard bop with organ while proposing aesthetic solutions that combine freshness and tradition.
The Padova Jazz Festival is organized by the Cultural Association Miles chaired by Gabriella Piccolo Casiraghi, in collaboration with the municipal and regional administrations, with the contribution of Bosco Costruzioni and Volksbank, and with the support of the Ministry of Culture.
