The Christmas Concert of the Friends of Music of Padua this year is linked to Palestrina 500, the series of events organized to celebrate the 500 years since the birth of Giovanni da Palestrina (1525-1594), the composer who was called the “prince of music” for the quality of his musical masterpieces.
The concert on Tuesday, December 16, at 8:30 PM at the Church of S. Benedetto in Padua will open with the compositions of Palestrina dedicated to the liturgical holiday of Christmas, Dies sanctificatus and Hodie Christus natus est. The Missa brevis by Palestrina will then be performed, followed by the Toccata for organ and the Magnificat for 5 voices and organ by Alessandro Scarlatti, a composer whose 300 years since his death is also being commemorated.
The Armonica Season is a vocal and instrumental ensemble specialized in Renaissance and Baroque repertoire, and has a long history of collaboration with prestigious orchestras, participating in the most important festivals and events in Italy and abroad.
For over 30 years, the ensemble was led by artistic director Maestro Sergio Balestracci. It is now directed by Luca Dordolo, a professor of Renaissance and Baroque Singing at the Conservatory Benedetto Marcello in Venice, with extensive experience in the performance practice of ancient music.
Equally dedicated to ancient music is the organist Carlo Rossi, a musician who regularly performs concerts, both as a soloist on the organ and harpsichord and as a continuo player, with various orchestras and ensembles specializing in Renaissance and Baroque music in Italy and abroad.
