Padovanità offers you this interesting visit to one of the most pleasant and interesting places in our beloved Padua: Palazzo Liviano, the Hall of Giants, and the adjacent archaeology museum of the University of Padua.
The Hall known as “of the Giants” was originally one of the main representative rooms of the Carraresi palace, the lords of Padua in the 14th century, and was decorated with a cycle of frescoes featuring famous figures from ancient history, based on the work De viris illustribus by Francesco Petrarca, who was already a guest and friend of Francesco I da Carrara. Of the 14th-century decoration, to which painters such as Altichiero da Zevio and Jacopo Avanzi probably contributed in the 1370s, today only the image of Petrarca in his study remains, albeit heavily retouched in subsequent centuries.
In the mid-16th century, the Hall, then in a dilapidated state of preservation, was restored as part of a large renovation of the former Carrarese palace, transformed under Venetian rule into the palace of the Capitanio, home to the authority responsible for the military command of Padua by the Most Serene Republic.
