Tuesday, February 3, at 8:15 PM at the Pollini Auditorium, special concert dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the death of John Dowland (1563 – 1626), a famous English Renaissance composer.
The viol consort Consorteria delle Tenebre will perform Lachrimae or Seven Teares, a collection of 21 pieces for a consort of 5 viols and lute, one of the most elaborate and influential compositions by John Dowland, a true “manifesto theme” of his sensitivity. And if it is true that Dowland’s music is known for its marked melancholic character, in the dedication to this work the author emphasizes that there are different types of tears: tears shed in sorrow, but also in joy and happiness, and that “the tears that music weeps” can be pleasant.
The collection is a complex work, composed of pavans and other dances, and offers a broad panorama of English instrumental writing of the early 17th century, rich in rhythmic and contrapuntal complexity.
Open rehearsal at 10:30 AM, Pollini Auditorium.
