The Padovanità Association presents:
Discovering the Church of Carmine and its Scoletta – Padua
Thursday, November 5, 2026 – at 4:00 p.m.
Padovanità invites you to this visit to a charming and precious place for the historical, artistic, and religious tradition of our city. You will enter the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine and its splendid Scoletta.
You will be amazed by the guide’s explanations through a true journey through time during the visit. The Basilica of Santa Maria del Carmine is popularly called i Carmini, after the monastic order that settled in Padua around the end of the 13th century. The first Church (the oldest known) was built in 1212, along with a convent for nuns, later rebuilt by the Carmelite friars before 1295. The reconstruction of the Church began in 1335, but the consecration of the new Church dedicated to Santa Maria del Carmine took place in 1446.
Next to the Basilica, we find the Scoletta del Carmine, where important examples of Renaissance art are preserved. Built in the 14th century as the seat of the homonymous confraternity, it is decorated with an important cycle of frescoes from the 16th century, depicting stories of Christ and Mary. The frescoes are the work of Girolamo Tessari, known as dal Santo, Giulio Campagnola, Domenico Campagnola, Stefano dall’Arzere, and collaborators.
