Animated visit: The Poetry of Nature. Victoria Aganoor

JUN 21, 2025
Other

In the present, set in a café in Venice, a waiter tells the legend of a house where “two who loved each other wanted to die together.” The “legend” is intertwined with the life of Vittoria Aganoor, who in Venice itself was planning to buy the “lovers” house’ (Venice, March 1895) and in a recently found letter, where the house is finely drawn, extols the beauty of dying together for love.

The mystery of the last romantic tragedy of the Belle Epoque – which has Italy from the Unification of Italy to the eve of the outbreak of the Great War (1855-1910) in the background – runs parallel to Vittoria and Guido’s life, the events of her family, and her love for nature, which is transformed into verse and poetry (“Eternal Legend,” 1900; “New Lyrics” 1908).

Vittoria Aganoor is a mysterious and fascinating woman of Armenian descent, born in Padua, but lived in Venice, Naples, Basalghelle (TV) and finally, after her marriage to MP Guido Pompilj, in Perugia and on the Umbrian shores of Lake Trasimeno.
