The Bach family, with Johann Sebastian’s three sons being compared in this program (Carl Philipp Emanuel, Wilhelm Friedemann, and Johann Christian), offers a compelling snapshot of the evolution of instrumental musical language in the 18th century, sensitive to the significant aesthetic shift from the “reassuring” contrapuntal rigor to the overwhelming pre-Romantic tremor.
Transverse flute and harpsichord shape the sound in opposite and complementary ways, making them perfect to represent this interesting dichotomy.
