Even in the midst of the All Saints’ Day weekend, Padovanità offers this interesting visit to one of the most delightful and interesting places in our beloved Padua: Palazzo Liviano, the Hall of Giants, and the adjacent archaeology museum of the University of Padua.
The hall known as “Hall of Giants” was originally one of the main representative spaces of the Carraresi palace, the lords of Padua in the 14th century, and was decorated with a cycle of frescoes featuring famous men from ancient history, based on the work De viris illustribus by Francesco Petrarch, who was already a guest and friend of Francesco I da Carrara. From the 14th-century decoration, likely worked on by painters such as Altichiero da Zevio and Jacopo Avanzi in the 1370s, only the image of Petrarch in his study remains today, albeit heavily retouched in the following centuries.
In the mid-16th century, the hall, then in a ruinous state of conservation, was restored as part of a broad renovation of the former Carrarese royal palace, transformed under Venetian rule into the palace of the Capitanio, the seat of the authority responsible for military command in Padua by the Most Serene Republic.
