Live music and photography interact in a special event of the Padova Jazz Festival. On Wednesday, November 12 at 8:45 PM at the Nuova Sant’Agnese (Fondazione Peruzzo), “Framing Compositions” will be staged, a multimedia project that arises from the creative encounter between pianist and composer Emanuele Sartoris and photographer Roberto Cifarelli.
Music and photography merge into a true visual concert, a multisensory perceptual experience created by the interaction between Sartoris’s musical art and Cifarelli’s visual skill, intertwined in a dialogue based on improvisation. Each performance is configured as a unique event, where each piano composition by Sartoris is inspired by a shot from Cifarelli and vice versa, creating a deep relationship between the two artistic forms. Photographs and music refer to one another, transporting the audience into an immersive and engaging universe, where images become sound and sounds become images. The project has also been released on disc (equipped with a QR code to access multimedia content) by Tǔk Art, the figurative section of the renowned Tǔk Music label.
Starting piano lessons at the age of 10, Emanuele Sartoris soon shows a keen interest in blues and African American music. His educational path takes off in seminars on improvisation and orchestration and culminates with a diploma obtained under the guidance of Dado Moroni at the Conservatory of Turin. He then furthered his studies in New York at The Juilliard School. Sartoris combines his intense concert activity with a significant teaching commitment. His presence as a permanent musical guest on the show “Nessun Dorma” on Rai 5 has led him to collaborate with renowned artists such as Eugenio Finardi, Patrizio Fariselli, Enrico Rava, Tullio De Piscopo, Stefano Di Battista, Fabrizio Bosso, Gianluigi Trovesi, and many others. He has released albums in solo piano, in duo with Marco Bellafiore, and with Daniele di Bonaventura, as well as with the Night Dreamers.
Roberto Cifarelli, born in 1964, has completed the journey that separates the photographs of an amateur with taste from those of a professional without losing his passion for music and respect for musicians, which is evident even in his early photographs from his apprenticeship years. Since the early 2000s, Cifarelli has become a professional in performance photography. His world of images has increasingly found space in specialized magazines (Musica Jazz at the forefront, as well as Jazzit, DownBeat, Amadeus, In Sound), on book covers or album covers published by major labels such as Blue Note and ECM, or by enterprising indies like Splasc(H), Abeat, Alfa Music, Cam Jazz, Via Veneto. Numerous festivals have invited him to exhibit: from Piacenza to Gallarate, from Iseo to Brianza, from Vicenza to Udine, Vignola, Ivrea, and even Cologne, Germany.
He actively collaborates with musicians in multimedia projects that connect music with images and has created the show Pentafotogramma, in which he documents live the pre and during of concerts by artists such as Antonello Salis, Enrico Rava, Paolo Fresu, Stefano Bollani… This close relationship of friendship and knowledge that binds him to musicians is also the secret of the immediacy of his photos, which primarily seek to reveal not so much the photographer as the artist, their unique gesturality.
The Padova Jazz Festival is organized by the Cultural Association Miles, chaired by Gabriella Piccolo Casiraghi, in collaboration with the municipal and regional administrations, with the support of Bosco Costruzioni and Volksbank, and with the assistance of the Ministry of Culture.
