The second evening of the Padova Jazz Festival will feature Roberto Gatto, the most celebrated Italian jazz drummer. On Friday, November 7 (at 9 PM), Gatto will perform at the Auditorium Centro Culturale Altinate/San Gaetano with his New Quartet, which includes the prominent presence of Alessandro Presti on trumpet, Alfonso Santimone on piano and keyboards, and Gabriele Evangelista on double bass.
Roberto Gatto’s (born in Rome in 1958) first notoriety dates back to 1975, the year of the debut of the Trio di Roma, co-directed along with two other musicians who were also destined to profoundly influence the history of national jazz: Danilo Rea and Enzo Pietropaoli. Since then, over fifty years of career, Gatto has established himself as the most representative example of Italian jazz drumming. His undeniable technical skills have made him one of the most sought-after drummers by both Italian leaders (Enrico Rava, Franco D’Andrea, Enrico Pieranunzi) and the most important foreign artists (Johnny Griffin, George Coleman, Phil Woods, Curtis Fuller, Chet Baker, Joe Zawinul, Pat Metheny).
After long serving as a sideman of luxury, Gatto is now mainly focusing on his role as a leader. He has created trios, quartets, quintets, and even larger formations, often working on skillfully constructed projects and highlighting a remarkable nose for talent as a talent scout.
Further confirmation of this new direction in Gatto’s career is his New Quartet, with which the drummer perfectly sharpens an elastic and open vision of jazz, respectful of its roots while simultaneously attentive to innovation. The result is a modern jazz enriched by the unpredictable flights of its soloists as well as the leader, stemming from the cohesion that forms among talents from different generations that stimulate each other.
