Thursday, July 3, 2025 Welcome Venice by Andrea Segre with Paolo Pierobon, Andrea Pennacchi, Roberto Citran, Ottavia Piccolo, Anna Bellato. Genre Drama, Italy, 2021, duration 100 minutes. The film, set on the island of Giudecca in Venice, tells the story of three brothers—Alvise, Piero, and Toni—who reunite in the family home after an accident. The house becomes the center of conflict: Alvise wants to turn it into luxury accommodation for tourists, while Piero and Toni are tied to tradition and the lagoon. Directed by Andrea Segre, the film reflects on the changes in Venice and the tension between local identity and mass tourism. Segre continues his artistic journey that began with “Io sono Li” and “Il pianeta in mare,” offering a melancholic look at the city, where the fragile beauty of the lagoon confronts modernity and fast tourism. The film intertwines family, cultural, and environmental themes, showcasing the conflict between preservation and transformation, with a poetic and reflective tone.

Thursday, July 10, 2025 I Told You So by Ginevra Elkann with Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Danny Huston, Greta Scacchi, Riccardo Scamarcio, Alba Rohrwacher. Genre Drama, Italy, 2023, duration 100 minutes. The film received 1 nomination at the Nastri d’Argento. The film, directed by Ginevra Elkann, is set in unusually warm Rome during winter and tells the intertwined lives of characters grappling with dysfunctional family relationships, addictions, and obsessions. Gianna is obsessed with a porn star, while her daughter Mia tries to stop her through a restraining order. Caterina, a former alcoholic, seeks redemption with the help of a former drug-addicted priest, while the arrival of her sister Fran from the USA reopens old family wounds. The film addresses themes such as guilt, the search for atonement, toxic bonds, and emotional distress within the upper middle class. With a grotesque and camp style, it paints a disturbed and judgmental world, marked also by climate change, where characters are crushed between the desire for redemption and inner conflicts. The performances of Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Valeria Golino underscore with intensity the family tensions and emotional transformations.

Thursday, July 17, 2025 Capri Revolution by Mario Martone with Marianna Fontana, Reinout Scholten van Aschat, Antonio Folletto, Gianluca Di Gennaro. Genre Drama, Italy, France, 2018, duration 122 minutes. The film received 7 nominations at the Nastri d’Argento, 13 nominations and won 2 David di Donatello. This work by Mario Martone, which completes a trilogy that began with Noi credevamo and Il giovane favoloso, is set in 1914 on the island of Capri, where a group of young people from Northern Europe gathers in a community to experiment with an alternative life and art. At the center of the story is Lucia, a young goatherd who approaches these strangers, and a young doctor with innovative ideas about science and interventionism. The narrative unfolds between daylight and nighttime parties, featuring an intense performance by Marianna Fontana. The tale revolves around a divided soul: the past, represented by the silent figure of the mother and family tradition, and the desire for openness and new opportunities, symbolized by the discovery of naked men and women on a cliff, which opens the protagonist to a different world. Martone evokes the communities of Diefenbach in Capri and Monte Verità in Locarno, where life was lived immersed in nature, in a vegetarian and artistic way, but also with internal contradictions. The story explores the contrast between the search for freedom and the tensions of an evolving community.

Thursday, July 24, 2025 The Wonders by Alice Rohrwacher with Maria Alexandra Lungu, Sam Louwyck, Alba Rohrwacher, Sabine Timoteo, Agnese Graziani. Full cast Genre Drama, Italy, 2014, duration 111 minutes. The film tells the story of Gelsomina, an introverted teenager who lives in the Umbrian countryside with her parents and young sisters. Curious and eager to discover the world, she is still very attached to her father Wolfgang and the simple life of their community, which produces honey and other natural products. Gelsomina’s routine is disrupted by the arrival of a television crew and Martin, a boy with a criminal background who must reintegrate into society. The presence of Martin and a TV host influence her life, bringing wonder and discovery. The film explores adolescence as a period of growth, justice, and freedom, seen through Gelsomina’s eyes, who still feels part of a rural world that resists the outside world. The director, with a delicate style, highlights the relationships between the characters and the relationship between nature and society, showing how Gelsomina, despite wanting to leave, finds strength and beauty in her environment. The film celebrates simple life, the seasons, and family relationships, with a conclusion where Gelsomina, as she grows up, approaches a new chapter in her life, symbolized by the encounter with Martin and the understanding of her relationship with her father.
