The project of pairing guitar and theorbo is absolutely original and unusual but justified, not only by the evocative sound that the duo manages to produce but also by a careful selection of repertoire capable of creating a particularly coherent musical journey:
From personal transcriptions of 20th-century pieces directly inspired by the lute repertoire (music by Manuel Ponce, Alexandre Tansman) to works by minimalist composers who indirectly drew inspiration from the ancient world (Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass), up to pieces expressly dedicated to the duo by contemporary composers, such as the premiere performance of “Suite a due” by Giacomo Susani.
Alongside these pieces, transcriptions of ‘dissonant’ madrigals by Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa are proposed, with the aim of conveying a sense of continuity between ancient and modern sounds.
