I married you for joy, the brilliant comedy by Natalia Ginzburg, a text that, with irony and depth, continues to question the audience about the dynamics of love and couple life. As in almost all of the author’s works, this first play written in 1965 addresses eternal themes such as love, relationships, mothers, death, and social inequality. It speaks about them almost without discussing them, telling stories that appear simple and familiar with the concrete language of everyday life. In its unusual unfolding between absences and presences, I married you for joy is a sort of vertigo, a labyrinth that leads back to the same point from which one started and from where one possibly sets off again seeking another path. Who knows? Somewhere, sooner or later, one must exit. Or perhaps not, just like in that thing we continue to call life. None of the characters seems driven by empathy towards others. Everything seems to stand or collapse on the poorly tolerated obligations of familial and bourgeois ties.
