The music that describes the four seasons has always been popular; Baroque composers like Werner and Fischer, to name just a few, have composed music on this theme. But no one like Antonio Vivaldi, in his Four Seasons, has done so in such a pictorial and emotional way!
The attention of the entire Baroque period to the changes of the seasons and the surprising, ever-changing aspect of the natural landscape is also evidenced by the sculptural masterpieces of Bernini. Baroque art dramatically conceives the relationship between man and nature and between man and the universe. The discoveries of Galileo Galilei mean that man no longer has a predominant position at the center of the cosmos, which leads to a new attitude of wonder and fear towards the power of nature.
Vivaldi’s Four Seasons are the symbol of this era. Not only is his spectacular description of nature, as we have seen, a source of wonder, but so is his very musical language. The composition aims to surprise the listener with unusual melodies, created through heightened rhythmic patterns and increased harmonic contrasts. His music thus becomes freer and more fluid, capable of best depicting the story it wishes to narrate, the scenes of birds singing in spring, summer thunderstorms, the flight of foxes in autumn, ending with chattering teeth and rain in winter. Best expressing the Baroque conception, nature is dramatized in a work of which the spectator feels actively involved, caught up in the swirling events that follow in a rapid rhythm.
