Teatro Verdi is the main Paduan Theatre. The first theatre on this site was commissioned by a Society of Paduan Nobleman and designed by Paduan architect Giovanni Gloria on a project by architect Antonio Cugini from Reggio. The theatre, which was originally called Teatro Nuovo (New Theatre) was inaugurated in 1751 with a melodrama of Metastasio. The theatre was restored many times. The most important restoration works were those of architect Giuseppe Jappelli in 1847 and those of Achille Sfondrini in 1884. In this year the Theatre was inaugurated with the new name Teatro Verdi. In 1917 bombing heavily damaged the dome ceiling. The Teatro Verdi current capacity is 700. The Verdi Theatre presents a varied programme, including the theatre season organized by the Teatro Stabile del Veneto Carlo Goldoni, the Teatro Ragazzi season (Children teatre), lyrics, concerts, ballets and other events.
