The protagonist is the infantryman Ugo Vardanega, originally from Possagno, who came out of the First World War with his mind shattered by the horror of the conflict, aware of being affected by an incurable disease: memory. So he decides to remember everything, without pretence, without escaping into madness, in a lucid desperation that will be his burden for the whole of his existence.
