The astronomical clock we see today was inaugurated in 1437. It is the faithful reconstruction, by the clockmakers Matteo Novello, Giovanni and Giampietro dalle Caldiere, of the previous one made in 1344, to be placed in the south tower door of the palace, by Jacopo Dondi da Chioggia, also known as ‘dall’Orologio’ due to the fame and exceptional nature of this work.
