Saturday 2 March is the last event of the Commedia dell’Arte festival organised by the Belteatro Association with the support of the Culture Department of the Municipality of Padua and starring the Venetian company Teatroimmagine.
On a stage, third-rate Commedianti dell’Arte want to entertain the audience by telling a lugubrious and strange story: that of the usurer Shylock who demands a pound of the flesh of the hated Antonio, as interest for a sum lent.
It is Shakespeare’s ‘Merchant of Venice’ which, using the masks of Italian tradition, amusingly recounts the deceit, lies and perversion of relationships based solely on the value of money. An ancient story that still manages to speak, and perhaps more strongly, to the people of today.
