«Embrace yourselves, multitudes! May this kiss go to the whole world!». A universal message of joy, brotherhood and humanity opens the new Opera Season in Padua that will kick off Thursday, August 1 at 21.15 in Piazza Eremitani with the monumental Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven, conducted by Marco Angius. An event that celebrates the 200th anniversary of the first performance of this symphonic masterpiece, with which Beethoven changed the course of music history.
An absolute masterpiece that, due to its size of artistic staff and complexity of execution, exerts a great force of attraction on all listeners. The symphony contains instrumental passages and choral tones that are pushed to the limit of possibilities and make you perceive a different, innovative, timeless music.
The concluding movement, the “Ode to Joy”, contains a strong ethical message: the universal union of all peoples, embraced in an ideal of freedom and brotherhood. For this reason in 1972 it was chosen as the Anthem of the European Community.
