Boarding the boat at Pontile Portello, the most important river port of Padua during the Venetian domination and docking point for all the boats that connected the city to the Venice lagoon.
Porta Portello stands out with its monumental Istrian stone portal and its beautiful sixteenth-century staircase (also painted on canvas by Canaletto) Navigation along a suggestive river route, among the internal canals of the city, skirting the ancient Venetian Renaissance walls which, with their gates and bastions, represent one of the longest curtain walls in Italy.
Participants will be able to savor the art and history of Padua and grasp details of the city not visible from the street.
Along the Piovego, a canal dug in 1230, we will travel along ancient river routes which for centuries represented the main transport route for goods and people. Along the walls and ancient bastions you arrive at the historic Ponte dei Graissi, the only one left in masonry along this river route.
Along the route we encounter the superb Villa Giovannelli, recently restored, an imposing “temple villa” which stands out for its classic pronaos and the beautiful staircase, designed by the architect Giorgio Massari and adorned with statues representing the five senses and reason.
Drink offered by the crew, the captain tells stories and anecdotes of the ”lost” world of river transport and the importance of waterways in the Paduan economy, describing how the ”barcaroli” of the past lived , illustrates the navigation lock mechanism designed by Leonardo da Vinci.
